Supporting Families on International Families Day

Today The Senior Move Partnership is celebrating International Families Day! In honour of the occasion, we would like to share how our Senior Move Managers (SMM) often work on behalf of, or as part of a team with, a family supporting their older relative.

The assistance we provide our clients often includes working closely with their family members. It is common for our SMMs to provide support for families who live a considerable distance away from their relatives - we receive many requests from far flung adult children living outside the UK asking for us to step in and help on their behalf. 

We understand that being unable to support a family member in person can be painful; the circumstances surrounding a later life move are not always perfect. Our SMMs are equipped to assist families where this may be the case, or other situations where the clients' relationships with their relatives is more strained. As a neutral, calm and sensitive presence, we can help take the tension out of moves, when family dynamics are challenging. 

The work of a SMM can include anything from liaising between family members, taking on the time commitment of complicated change of address work and being there as physical and emotional support before, during and after the move. On move day, our Move Managers have often been delighted to hear clients say 'its like having a Daughter for the day!'.

Distance, work and family commitments can all make providing much needed support to a older relative a challenge. This is when a SMM can make a real difference - by being local to the client and effectively making the preparations for the move and the move itself happen in a timely and stress-free way.
